Earthquake information published on the Council for Geoscience Website (“the Website”) is obtained from waveforms recorded by smaller localised networks of the South African National Seismograph Network which are aimed at monitoring the seismicity in and around the mining regions more accurately. The focus on the mining regions is to assist in the understanding of seismicity in those regions as it poses a danger to lives as well as continued economic operations. The information provides both the automated and analysed assessment of earthquake parameters. Viewers of the Website are cautioned that the parameters shown are considered preliminary, unless otherwise indicated. Users are cautioned that the intended purpose and use is exclusively for information and that the Council for Geoscience does not accept liability arising from use of or inferences made from the information as published on the Website.

The following table lists the seismic events recorded by the Council for Geoscience where “origin time” indicates the date and time (in UTC) on which the event occurred; “Latitude” and “longitude” indicate the geographical coordinates of the location of the event in decimal degrees; “Magnitude” indicates the local magnitude (Ml) calculated for the event; “Magnitude Type” indicates preliminary determined local magnitude “M” (this may differ from the final magnitude); “Reviewed” indicates whether or not the event has been analysed and reviewed by a seismologist (“Y”) or if it is an automatic location (“N”) which has not been analysed; “Location” provides a link to view a map of the location of the event.
